Wooden Bed Frames

On this page I will be writing about wooden bed frames and metal bed frames. I will be highlighting the key differences, my preference and the reasons for these.

People say that the thing that makes a bed is the mattress. “Have a good mattress” they say, “and you’ll have a good night’s sleep”. While I don’t necessarily disagree with this (in fact, having a good, solid mattress is one of the keys to sleeping well and in comfort) It is not the only thing that matters. The second thing that most people highlight when defining what makes a great bed is the headboard. While your bed’s headboard can make it appear a lot nicer, it only really benefits you if you like to sit up against it (possibly for reading or for watching TV in bed).

People seldom mention wooden bed frames (or any kind of bed frames for that matter). The kind of bed frame that you get is actually very important, and I’ll explain why. The reason why wooden bed frames are the best kind to invest in is because you can fit almost any kind of headboard onto them, meaning you can customise your bed to any way that you want. In case you haven’t bought or looked at several headboards before, there are literally thousands of different full size headboards to choose from – each with their own unique pattern or design to differentiate them from one another.

Many people these days tend to favour metal or steel frames for their beds. The main reason for this is that they provide superior strength over any other material and because they are so cheap to make they can be sold at a cheaper price (making them obviously more appealing for anyone on a tight budget or for anyone with a sense of frugality).

I will leave you with one final warning, however – Whenever buying one or more wooden bed frames then always be sure to check the quality of design and strength of materials. By this I mean that you should thoroughly inspect the wooden bed frame (while it has no mattress on it) and make sure that the wood is thick and pure – you don’t want pulp wood or chip board as it will fall apart in no time at all. Also, check how the pieces are joined together – are the attached by a few simple nails or are they joined by thick, deep screws? I once bought a bed that was badly put together. I spent the whole evening assembling it and was extremely proud of myself once I had it all assembled. I took the time to put my brand new mattress on it and to put sheets on it as well. When I finally sat down on it for the first time, to my utter surprise and disgust I found myself falling through to the floor – one of my brand new wooden bed frames had simply collapsed onto itself. A screw that was holding everything together slipped out, and I was lucky not to be hurt.
